All about Wellington Florida- come for a day- stay for a while.
Wellington Florida is one of those towns where when you drive up to the entrance you know you are in a town or a village. Still to this day when if I have to drive to other cities around Wellington Florida when I reach those signs at the entrance of our Village of Wellington I feel like, "Ah.. I am home."
We rarely have any traffic. Our 'big congestion' that we avoid is when schools are stating in the morning or letting out in the afternoon. Most parents here drive to pick up their kids from school and of course that makes for some long car lines. You learn very quickly what times those are and then avoid driving those particular roads at that time of day.
Wellington Florida is a very new village that was incorporated in 1995. In 19951 C. Oliver Wellington bought all this land that is now Wellington Florida. He established the Acme Drainage District in 1953. This was very important for drainage issues because at that time the land here flooded frequently with water. It does not flood any more ( although it could during a hurricance) because of the drainage systems that were established.
Originally all this land was for agriculture. The Southwestern territory of Wellington borders the Florida Everglades. The waterlogged land soon turned into very fertile farmland that certainly changed the way the land looked. 2,000 acres of Strawberries were grown and cultivated here at that time. Wellington Florida was once the world's largest strawberry patch. Bet you didn't know that!
C. Oliver Wellington died in 1959 which led to his family and company having to start to develop tracts of land in Wellington for residential development in order for them to pay the estate taxes because Oliver Wellington died.
In 1971 the first tract of land was sold for like $800 per acre! Wouldn't you like to travel back in time to grab up some of that land!
In 1978 a lot of the land here in Wellington Fl was sold to Bill Ylvisaker who just died a couple of months ago. You can read the story I wrote about Bill Ylvisaker here. One of his daughters is a broker up in New York and she is also an agent here in Wellington Florida. She and I did our Florida licensing courses together and we became friends back in 1995.
In 1953 there were only about 100 people living here in Wellington Florida.
Thankfully for Bill Ylvisaker who was an avid Polo Player- Wellington has become world famous for Equestrians and Polo players and events. Wellington Florida is one of the most successfully laid out and crafted communities in all of South Florida and especially in Palm Beach County.
The richness of culture, diversity and affluence of Wellington help keep values up and even though we took our share of the declining market the marketability of just the name of Wellington alone will pull us through.
Wellington Florida is home to some of the world's premier equestrian facilities, horse farms, agriculture and nurseries. There are also small condos for those who just want to have a place to hang their hat during horse season to grand estates.
Wellington Florida is home to the Aero Club of Wellington which is an aeronautical community where you can have a home with a hangar right next to your garage. Some of the homes are located right on the taxi way which is a large green grass strip.
